When choosing a carpet for your home, it is important to not only consider style, colour and cost, but also how it will be used in your home. Hallways, living areas and dining areas will need a shorter, more robust carpet to better handle the high use. Bedrooms with less traffic can have a deeper, more luxurious carpet.

Natural materials such as wool (dyed and undyed) have the added benefit of being resilient, warm and comfortable to walk on, and are even fire resistant. Man-made carpets, such as those made with polypropylene fibres, can be more cost-effective, easily cleaned and water resistant.

Both fibres are available in cut pile, which feels soft, or in loop pile, which gives a more contemporary feel and is firmer. The loops can be of varying sizes. The shorter and closer the loop, the harder wearing the carpet will be. The larger and more open ones feel softer but will not perform as well. Cut pile carpets are available in plain or patterned, where loop piles are generally plain or flecked.

Carpet Underlays

You may feel that an underlay is unnecessary when buying a carpet, but in truth, it is essential for the longevity of your carpet. It increases comfort levels, depth of feel and the life of the carpet by up to 40%. Some of the main benefits include cushioning, shock absorption, better acoustics (sound proofing), insulation and more.

We have different types of underlaying for certain areas of your home that include the following:
• Crumb Rubber – This offers durability and is best for halls, stairs, landings, living rooms and dining rooms. It minimises indents and is made of recycled car tyres. 
• Crumb/Felt –Similar to crumb rubber, this has a felt topping of recycled wool, giving a slightly softer feel, and is ideal for woven carpets such as Axminsters and Wiltons.
• PU Foam –This is great for bedrooms where extra comfort is required. For extra warmth, they have good tog ratings as well as increased impact sound ratings. It is made from recycled materials, including cuts of foam from the furniture trade.
• Sponge Rubber Underlay - For under floor heating, with .75 togs, the lower tog rating allows the warmth to pass quickly into the room.
• Underlays for wood/laminates or click system floors - These are thinner than traditional carpet underlays and help with impact sound reduction, some having built-in DPMs.

Preserve and lengthen your carpet’s lifespan with an underlay. It not only makes your carpet more comfortable, but it can also prevent indentations from heavy furniture and can even be kept when you get new flooring!
